Scholarships

The Race Track Industry Program awards current and incoming students scholarships that range between $2,000–$10,000 per year.  In addition, RTIP students can apply for industry sponsored scholarships (below) designed specifically for them.

Odds On Racing Scholarship

John K. Goodman Scholarship

Sponsored by The Jockey Club, this award honors John K. Goodman, one of the Program's founders. It is awarded annually to an RTIP student.

Application Deadline:

  • May 1 — New students enrolling for the Fall 2022 Semester

Eligibility:
You are eligible to apply for the RTIP Odds On Racing Scholarship if:

  • You are officially considered an out-of-state student by the University of Arizona
  • You are currently enrolled or have been accepted to the University of Arizona
  • You are, or will be, an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Animal Sciences and the Race Track Industry Program
  • You have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • You have an immediate past semester GPA of at least 3.0.

  • A complete transcript.
  • An essay discussing your involvement and career goals in racing and what receiving this award would mean to you.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to seeking employment in the Thoroughbred racing industry.
  • The scholarship is open to RTIP students in their junior and senior year. All applicants must have already completed one full semester at the University of Arizona.
  • Students who receive scholarships in their junior year will be eligible for a scholarship in their senior year, provided they have completed an internship with NYRA during the summer after their junior year.
  • Students must maintain a 2.5 grade-point average and have full-time status in the RTIP (If either of these requirements are not met, NYRA reserves the right to withhold from the scholarship commitment for the following spring semester).
  • Applicants must be RTIP students who are residents of the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico.

Current Students:
You are eligible to apply for an RTIP Scholarship if:

  • You have applied for the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences scholarships 
    (Accepted January–March).
  • You have shown active participation in the RTIP
  • You have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • You have an immediate past semester GPA of at least 2.5.
  • You have no outstanding “I” grade (that has not been discussed/approved
    prior to review of the application).

Criteria for Award:

  • Academic excellence and participation. Participation includes attending Speakers Series and other classes when a guest is presenting and you are not enrolled in the class that semester; assisting with the Symposium through student committees and organizational help such as mailings, etc.

  • A brief outline of your participation in RTIP activities.

Application Deadline:

  • March 30

New Students:
You are eligible to apply for an RTIP Scholarship if:

  • You have been accepted to the University of Arizona.
  • You have shown active interest in the racing industry.
  • You have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (at the schools you have attended).
  • You have an immediate past semester GPA of at least 2.5 (at the most recent school).

Criteria for Award:

  • Quality of goals essay and academic excellence/potential.

To Apply—Complete RTIP application and attach:

  • A complete transcript.
  • An essay discussing your involvement and career goals in racing.
  • Acceptance to the UA, transcripts from high school or previous college/university, an essay about their goals in the industry must accompany the application.

Application Deadline:

  • June 30 — New students enrolling for the Fall Semester
  • November 30 — New students enrolling for the Spring Semester

Turf Publicists of America Scholarship
November
The TPA scholarship is for a RTIP student with a strong record of academic achievement and an interest in journalism or publicity. Scholarship recipients will be selected by TPA officers on the basis of an application process that includes an essay submission. Details for the 2020 scholarship will be available in the Fall, with the winner will be announced at the 2022 Global Symposium on Racing in December.

The Jockey Club John "Jack" Goodman Scholarship 
Deadline February 1
Awarded annually to a student or students at the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). The $6,000 ($3,000 per semester) annual scholarship is based on academic achievement, proposed career path in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and previous industry involvement. Goodman was a longtime member of The Jockey Club and is one of three founders of the RTIP.

The Jockey Club Scholarship

The Jockey Club Scholarship, in the amount of $15,000 per year ($7,500/semester), is awarded annually to candidates pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the equine or applicable field of study. .
